The most accurate way to find out if your house contains asbestos products is to have it inspected and tested by an accredited laboratory. You can’t tell by looking at it!

Asbestos-containing materials were commonly used in the construction and renovation of homes until the mid‑1980s and some products were used until the early 1990s. See our pages about asbestos and asbestos products around your home for further information on asbestos-containing materials used in housing construction.

If the asbestos-containing material is in good condition it is best to leave it alone unless it is likely to be exposed or damaged. If the material is in good condition and is left undisturbed, non-friable asbestos presents no known health risks.
